Lisa Doyle is Absolutely Fine Pitch: Gay Times

Hi,

I’m pitching a first-person piece by novelist Mo Fanning on the gay best friend in commercial fiction: why the trope is still stuck in the 90s, and what happens when a queer writer gives the GBFF a real interior life instead of just the punchlines.

Mo’s new romcom, Lisa Doyle is Absolutely Fine (out 18 June), puts a GBFF flatmate at the centre of the story. Not as comic relief, not as the sassy sidekick. He’s messy, loyal and complicated. Mo wrote him as the friend he wanted to read about and never found.

Mo is a gay novelist with five books out, the Page Turner 2025 Best LGBTQ Winner, and has a piece running in The Bookseller’s LGBTQ+ June Edition. He’s speaking at Queer the Shelves in Nottingham on 27 June, and has previously written for QX and Pink News.

Happy to shape this however works for you. 800-1,200 words, flexible on angle and timing.

Best,
